There’s a moment after hearing the words “you have cancer” when everything feels too big to take in. Your chest tightens. Your thoughts race. It’s like standing on the shore when a massive wave knocks you off your feet—you’re tossed, tumbled, disoriented, not sure which way is up. You’re not even sure if you’ll be able to get your head above water again to take a breath.
Fear rushes in so fast it feels like you’re drowning. What will happen to me? What about my kids, my partner, my work, my future? The wave of terror doesn’t just knock you down—it keeps pulling you under.
If this is where you are right now, please know: this is normal.
You’re human. Fear is your body’s natural alarm system.
The problem comes when that alarm won’t turn off.
Instead of protecting you, it hijacks you. You can’t sleep. You can’t think clearly. Every choice in front of you feels like it’s life or death—because in a way, it is.
Here’s the truth no one tells you: you don’t have to “conquer” your fear. You don’t have to bury it or rise above it. What you need is to work with it until you are able to let it go. To soothe your nervous system so your body gets the signal that, in this moment, you are safe. To gently shift from drowning in panic to standing on more solid ground.
Sometimes that starts with the simplest acts—slowing your breath, pressing your feet into the floor, naming out loud what you’re feeling. These small practices send ripples of calm back through your body. From there, you can begin to see more clearly. The fear is still there, but it no longer has you by the throat.
And when that happens, your brain comes back online again. Your decisions become less about panic and more about alignment with your values and what’s important to you. You can make decisions with your head, your heart, and your gut - not based on fear.
That’s exactly why I created my upcoming workshop, “You’ve Just Been Diagnosed With Cancer. Now What?”
It’s happening October 4, and it’s designed for this exact moment—when fear is flooding in and you don’t know how to catch your breath.
In these two hours together, I’ll guide you through simple, practical tools to calm your body, release some of the terror, and find the steadiness you need to take your next steps with clarity and courage.
Fear doesn’t get to decide your future. You do.
