Making Peace with Uncertainty: Finding Strength, Clarity, and Joy in the New Year

December 29, 20243 min read

Uncertainty can feel overwhelming. Whether it’s about your health, career, relationships, or finances, the unknown has a way of pulling at your confidence and peace of mind. For women like you—driven, accomplished, and always juggling life’s demands—uncertainty can feel especially unsettling. After all, you’re used to solving problems, not waiting for answers. And if you or a family member has experienced cancer or some other life-threatening illness, you may be living with an entirely different level of uncertainty than ever before.

But the truth is,  uncertainty isn’t going anywhere. Life will always have elements beyond our control. The real challenge isn’t eliminating uncertainty; it’s learning how to live alongside it in peaceful coexistence, without losing yourself to fear.

So, how do you do that? How do you step into a new year without letting the "what-ifs" steal your joy?

First, remind yourself: you’ve already faced the unimaginable. Cancer (or whatever else you have been through) taught you resilience in ways few people truly understand. Take a moment to honor that. You have done hard things before and if you had to, you could do hard things again.

Next, let’s tackle the fear head-on. Much of our fear around uncertainty stems from our mind’s need to predict and control. When the future feels unknown, our brains start spinning worst-case scenarios. But here’s a trick: instead of fighting the fear, sit with it. Name it. Write it down if that helps. Once it’s out of your head and onto paper, it loses some of its power.

Then, shift your focus. Ask yourself: What do I know for sure? Maybe it’s that you’re loved. That you’ve navigated tough times before. That you’re capable of asking for help when you need it. Grounding yourself in the certainties of your life can calm the storm of "what-ifs."

And, remember this:

Most of what we worry about never happens.

Finally, look for small ways to create certainty in your day-to-day. Build routines that feel nourishing. Take five minutes each morning to breathe, stretch, or journal. Plan one activity each week that brings you joy—whether it’s a quiet walk, a coffee date with a friend, or simply reading a book you’ve been meaning to get to. Doing these things can make it easier to deal with the areas where you do have uncertainty.

Uncertainty doesn’t have to mean fear. It can also mean possibility. The unknown holds room for growth, discovery, and even joy. This year, instead of fearing what you can’t predict, lean into the things you can: your strength, your support system, and your ability to navigate whatever comes next.

Let’s learn to keep the “what-ifs” that are wonderful possibilities and toss the “what-ifs” that we don’t need to worry about because they probably won’t happen.

And if it feels like too much? Don’t hesitate to reach out. You don’t have to navigate the unknown alone. You have more resources—within yourself and your community—than you realize. And if the above tips don’t clear your fear or anxiety, please reach out to me - I’ve got a whole toolbox full of ways for you to clear fear rapidly and live your life the way you were meant to!

Here’s to embracing the year ahead with courage, clarity, and maybe even a little curiosity.
