What If Beating Cancer Doesn’t Mean What You Think It Does?

August 02, 20263 min read

Imagine your house catches fire.

You make it out safely. The firefighters arrive and put out the fire. Eventually, the smoke clears.

Everyone celebrates because you survived.

But putting out the fire isn't the same thing as helping someone feel safe enough to live in their house again. And it doesn’t eliminate the grief over what was lost in the flames.

Would anyone expect you to simply "get over it" because the fire is out?

Of course not.

You survived the fire. But healing from the experience is a completely different journey.

Cancer is much the same.

When people say someone has "beaten cancer," they're usually talking about one thing: that there's no evidence of disease (NED).

In fact, people who have never had cancer (or, as I jokingly call them, "cancer muggles") often hear NED and think it means you’re "cured"—that the cancer chapter is closed and life simply goes back to normal. Those of us who have lived through cancer know it's not that simple.

Whether you're living with no evidence of disease, still in treatment, or living with ongoing cancer, there's an emotional journey that continues alongside the medical one.

Healing physically doesn't automatically mean you've healed emotionally.

That's why beating cancer isn't what most people think it is.

It's about what your life feels like—and how much cancer is still influencing your thoughts, your decisions, and the way you see the world.

Cancer doesn't just affect your body. It changes the way you relate to it. It changes your sense of safety. It changes the way you think about the future. It can leave you questioning your decisions, doubting yourself, and wondering if you'll ever feel like "you" again.

Those wounds are real.

They just don't show up on a CT scan or a blood test.

Think about the house fire again.

Healing doesn't mean pretending the fire never happened. It doesn't mean forgetting how frightening it was or denying that it changed you.

It means reaching the point where you're no longer living every day as though your house is about to catch fire again.

Cancer will always be part of your story. There will always be moments of uncertainty. But uncertainty doesn't have to define the rest of your story—or how you live it.

It's about reclaiming your life.

It's about finding peace in the midst of uncertainty.

It's about feeling like yourself again—or perhaps discovering a new version of yourself that's even more authentic, more intentional, and more aligned with who you want to be now.

And that kind of healing is possible whether you're in treatment, living with ongoing cancer, or living with no evidence of disease.

Your medical team works to treat the cancer.

My work is helping people heal the invisible wounds cancer leaves in its wake.

If you're ready to step out of the shadow of cancer and start reclaiming your life, I'd love to talk.

Schedule a complimentary conversation, and let's explore what healing beyond the physical could look like for you.
