For a lot of people, Memorial Day marks the beginning of the summer season, even though summer doesn't officially start for several more weeks.
And for a lot of people, it also marks the beginning of outdoor party and barbecue season and vacations, where people can get into trouble with their eating for many reasons.
If you suffer from cravings, you may find yourself in settings where some of your cravings foods abound (chips, ice cream, cake, to name a few).
If you are someone who tends to associate celebrations with overeating certain special foods, or just with continually eating as part of celebrating, you may also get into trouble.
And the flip side of celebrations, especially family celebrations, is that there may also be some stressful situations that trigger you if you are an emotional eater.
And for the self-sabotage folks, trying to tell themselves "to be good" may trigger their inner rebel to unconsciously take over and eat everything in sight.
The bottom line is that summer events and vacations can be hard for people who struggle in any way with any type of emotional eating.
Some people even deal with their anxiety about these events by avoiding these situations completely and just staying home.
But that's no good either.
You are meant to enjoy your life, your family, and your friends.
You're even meant to enjoy your food without feeling like it's your enemy!
If your emotions tend to drive your eating, take a moment to think about what and how you will eat at these types of events.
As the world begins to open up again now that most of us are vaccinated against Covid, some of us will spend time with friends or family this weekend.
Here's the thing: you are going to be spending time with your friends and family because of the company, not just because of the food. The party is about the connections (now more than ever, as we emerge from over 2 years of isolation).
If you find that you are driven by cravings, or driven to eat in group situations, there are good reasons for that! But it's surprisingly to release these urges and enjoy the connections and good feelings about being with friends and family without having to feel compelled to eat.
What if one serving of your favorite food felt like enough and you didn't want to have three servings?
What if the negative emotions that sometimes come up for you at family gatherings no longer drove you to eat?
You'd be amazed at how simple it can be to eliminate emotional eating, cravings, and self-sabotage. And along the way to eliminate the things that are blocking you in other areas of your life.
