What's your goal-setting style?
Do you just make a list and do stuff?
Or do you need a little more than that to get yourself going?
Traditional goal-setting tells you to do this, starting with SMART goals, which you’ve probably already heard of.
Here's a typical example of what you're told to do:
Clearly define the goal and make it specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART).
Break down the goal into smaller, manageable tasks.
Assess your current resources and abilities, and identify any potential obstacles or challenges.
Set a deadline for achieving the goal and make a plan to work towards it.
Regularly review your progress and adjust your plan as needed.
Celebrate your accomplishments and learn from any setbacks.
This is great - if you can get yourself to DO all the steps. For some people, and some goals, this works just fine.
For others, sometimes people get stuck - they can usually do steps 1-4 pretty easily.
But then they don't take much, if any action, so steps 5 and 6 never even stand a chance of seeing the light of day.
There's another way to do it, one that involves engaging your heart and gut in addition to your rational brain, aligning your goals with your values, what's really important to you.
It goes something like this:
Setting heart-centered goals involves setting goals that align with your values and passions, rather than solely focusing on external validation or success. Here are a few steps to help you set heart-centered goals:
Identify your values: Understand what matters to you the most and what drives you.
Connect with your passion: Reflect on what brings you joy and fulfillment.
Set intentions: Set your goals with the intention to grow and align them with your values and passions.
Be realistic: Be honest with yourself about what is achievable and what you are willing to do to achieve it. Otherwise it will all fall apart.
Prioritize self-care: Make sure that your goals do not compromise your well-being, and include self-care in your plan. You don't want to let your well-being go, and you don't want to set goals that cause internal conflict that could get in your way.
Reflect regularly: Take time to reflect on your progress and check in with yourself to make sure that your goals align with your heart's desires.
Be open to change: Be open to the possibility that your goals and priorities may change as you grow and evolve, and be willing to adjust accordingly.
It turns out that when your goals are aligned with your values, with what's really important to you, it becomes much easier to take action.
The other thing that makes it easier to both set goals and take action is to identify what your challenges are - what is standing in your way, and find ways to deal with that.
And those are the things I want to help you with.
